200 Years of Faith, Family & Friendship
Celebrating 200 Years of the Peter Robinson Immigration to Downeyville, Ontario
In 1825, one of the most significant waves of Irish immigration to Canada took place under the leadership of Peter Robinson, a member of Upper Canada’s Executive Council. Tasked with relieving poverty in Ireland and populating the rugged lands of Ontario, Robinson organized a monumental journey that brought nearly 2,000 settlers from Ireland’s counties Cork, Tipperary, and Limerick to what is now known as the Kawartha Lakes region. These settlers, many of whom were escaping famine and hardship, carried with them little more than their faith, resilience, and hope for a better future.

Downeyville, Ontario, became one of the communities established by these settlers, who worked tirelessly to transform the forested landscape into a thriving village. They built homes, cultivated farmland, and, most importantly, created a close-knit community centered around their faith and shared heritage. The church in Downeyville has remained a cornerstone of this community, a testament to the settlers’ commitment to faith and family.

This year, we honour their incredible journey and legacy with a 200th anniversary celebration. Through storytelling, activities, and community gatherings, we invite community members, visitors, and families far and wide to join us in remembering the courage, determination, and faith of the Irish settlers.

Let us celebrate together as we pay tribute to their sacrifices and achievements, ensuring their legacy continues to inspire future generations. Stay tuned for event details and join us in this special milestone for our community!
